Achievements
In 2007 there were over 14,500 postgraduates across all Monash Victorian campuses. Throughout its lifetime the MPA has lobbied long and hard over many issues; some of the work has come to fruition in an obvious concrete form, but most often the changes have happened gradually.
Some of the MPA's major achievements include:
-
provision of postgraduate-specific lounges, computer labs and study spaces
-
coordinating and expanding the range of postgraduate-specific seminars on offer across all campuses
-
improving services and support to coursework postgraduates
-
recognising and providing for the needs of off-campus postgraduates
-
together with MRGS, being responsible for creating the supervisory Code of Practice that supports a professional and harmonious student-supervisor relationship
-
protecting students’ intellectual property rights
-
successfully lobbying the University to allow part-time research postgraduates access to candidature extension time in parity with time available to full-time candidates
-
the initiation of scholarship schemes such as the Silver Jubilee Scholarship, the Disability Scholarship, two postgraduate research bursaries for Indigenous Australians and Postgraduate Support Bursaries for full fee-paying postgraduate coursework programs
-
establishing a joint venture with the University of Melbourne Postgraduate Association to run an annual cross-institutional postgraduate ball.
