Key steps to effective career planning
Con
There are varying reasons why an individual chooses to undertake postgraduate study. Reasons can be anything from work-sponsored professional development, a chance for a career change, or just plain interest. The career aspirations of the postgraduate student are diverse and not necessarily limited to their designated discipline-specific study area.
Postgraduate students carry with them a wealth of life and work experiences, along with a broad range of skills. Postgraduate qualifications can provide opportunities to pursue careers in a broad range of areas. The possibilities are far and wide, and the key to identifying these opportunities lies in three critical success factors:
-
First, you should assess what you want from work, taking into account your personality, values and interests. Take stock of the depth of skills and knowledge that you have acquired throughout your working life. Do not underestimate the value that your experience will bring to a potential organisation or role. A thorough self audit enables you to determine whether a particular industry, job or work environment is the right one for you and guides you towards a more informed career decision.
Explore possible industries and occupations and analyse their requirements so you can better match your capabilities and needs with that organisation or industry. Many organisations offer graduate entry schemes. It is a common misconception among postgrads that due to the status and title of their postgraduate qualification, a ‘graduate’ program is not suitable for them. On the contrary, such a program is open to all applicants and can be an ideal way to enter an industry.
-
Finally, improve and update your skills in the art of self marketing which includes writing covering letters, competency-focused resumes, addressing selection criteria and the ability to interview impressively.
