MPA Free Lunch and Discussion



Part of the postgraduate seminar day (see below) the MPA will host a lunch and discussion for all coursework and research postgraduates. The aim of the lunch is to inform Gippsland postgraduates about the services that MPA can provide including advice and advocacy, postgraduate seminars and social events. This is also an opportunity to inform the MPA about the needs of Gippsland postgraduates. Meet other postgraduates and help us develop a postgraduate network.

From written application to interview – tips for postgraduates  (ECD)



Improve your chances of being selected for interview by producing targeted application documents.  Receive practical advice on addressing selection criteria and producing a resume that effectively markets your qualifications, skills and attributes.  This session also gives tips to help you prepare for interviews, present as a professional and deliver responses with confidence.

All doctoral and MPhil candidates may submit a thesis by publication. This session explains the general requirements of this thesis format and provides information about faculty-specific requirements.

Library (Gippsland)

The Library is here to help you find, use and manage information effectively by using our services and resources.

There are library staff with specialist knowledge in your particular discipline who can be contacted at any stage of your studies. Their expertise includes resource discovery, analysis and use; essay, report and thesis writing; and oral presentation skills.

Information research skills

Librarians can help you with such research skills as:

  • finding,evaluating and using information effectively

  • how and where to start researching

  • how to structure a search

  • avoiding plagiarism by citing and referencing

  • using endnote

Learning skills

Learning skills advisers can help you with:

  • academic English

  • study methods

  • problem solving and critical thinking

  • reading strategies

  • essay, report and thesis writing

  • writing for research reports

  • oral communication and presentation

As well as formal classes, the Gippsland Library offers individual sessions upon request.

Attend a hands-on session on using this software to manage your references. Learn how to create an EndNote library of references, import database records into your library and apply EndNote styles to a bibliography.

Gippsland Association of Postgraduate Student

GAPS coffee club



GAPS will hold informal discussion sessions on the last Thursday of every month. This event is open to all postgraduate students. Join us in chatting about the postgraduate experience and take the opportunity to bounce ideas off fellow colleagues.

Date: last Thursday of every month 4:00 – 5:00pm (commencing June)

GAPS AGM & dinner



GAPS will report on its events, activities and achievements for 2009. The 2010 GAPS Committee elections will also take place, followed by a dinner for all postgraduate students.

The MPA is building up a series of podcasts which can help keep students entertained and informed.

We are currently developing a series of podcast seminars on a variety of topics.

The Monash Research Graduate School has a number of resources available for research students through their exPERT series.

exPERT DVDs - DVDs are available for loan from the Libraries. To find the expert DVDs at your closest library please enter “Monash Research Graduate School” in the “author” section of the search engine in the library catalogue.

The Learning Support unit also offers online guide for higher degree by research postgraduates
